The playground was built with an amazing volunteer effort in 2004. Over time it fell into disrepair, and in 2013 it was closed by the Maui County Parks Department for safety reasons. The Haiku Community Association stepped up to provide thousands of hours of volunteer work led by Playground Chair Jennifer Livingston, and raised money from the County of Maui and local businesses to buy materials.
The playground reopened in June 2016. The Haiku Community Association will be maintaining the playground for the next 10 years with support from the community and the County of Maui.
