Free Hazardous Waste Recycling

A free hazardous waste recycling day will happen on March 27th. The drive-thru event will be held in Central Maui and is by appointment only.

Items accepted include aerosols, antifreeze, car batteries, household batteries, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, oil-based paint, pesticides, solvents and thermometers. Residents should ask about other hazardous items when they call to make an appointment.

To make an appointment, call Cameron Chemical Corp. at (808) 695-2999 by March 18 and have a list of hazardous materials ready.

Maui Water Use and Development Plan

On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, the Water Commission is expected to decide on the approval of the Maui Island Water Use and Development Plan (MIWUDP), which will be used as a blueprint for all uses of water on Maui for the next 20-years and sets the trajectory for our future water conservation, development and tourism growth.

The WUDP was written in 2019 and has gone through a couple of reviews by the Maui County Council since then. Unfortunately, a lot has changed which is not reflected in the WUDP, and it since it plays such an important role in the future of Maui water, it should probably be revised again.

Here is a link for a petition put together by the Sierra Club, which you can check out for more details on how the WUDP can be improved. Or, attend the CWRM (Water Commission) meeting and comment directly. Water is a limited resource on Maui, and we all need to think about how we use it carefully.

Mahalo!
