Ha’iku Water Quality

Many streams in the Haiku area (from Maliko Gulch to Ke’anae) are used recreationally as well as for domestic or agricultural purposes, but very little is known about the quality of the water in these streams. HCA, in partnership with Maui County, Surfrider, and the University of Hawai’i, Water Resources Research Center, has started to sample from four popular Haiku streams:

  • Na’ili’ilihaele stream. This flows through the bamboo forest area.
  • Honopou stream.
  • Kailua stream, at the “dog pond”.
  • Ho’olawa. This has two branches. Ho’olawali’ili’i and Ho’olawanui, that flow through Twin Falls.

Sampling sites are marked with a red star in the map, above. We are gathering samples twice per month from each of these streams. To view the most recent snapshot of key water quality metrics, use one of the buttons, below. In situ data are published here within a days of gather. Inorganic nutrients take a few weeks to be tested by the lab and thus older. Stream pics are quick and show the recent condition of each location.

If you are interested in accessing our complete set of data, for all sites and all measurements, since the beginning of the project, please email us at the link below.

We will be adding additional streams to test, so if you have suggestions of streams in the Haiku area, please let us know! You can email us at: haikucommunitypm@gmail.com.
